Caray joined the Chicago White Sox in 1971 and quickly became popular with the South Side faithful and enjoying a reputation for joviality and public carousing (sometimes doing home game broadcasts bare-chested from the bleachers). Caray's famous seventh-inning stretch singing of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" began during his tenure with the White Sox. Team owner Bill Veeck noticed the announcer liked to hum the song along with Comiskey Park organist Nancy Faust. Veeck asked Caray if he could give him a microphone so he could sing for the entire park, but the announcer wanted no part of it. Veeck then proceed to advise Caray that he had already taped the announcer singing during commercial breaks and said he could play that recording if Caray preferred. Instead, Caray agreed to sing it live, accompanied by Faust on the organ, and went on to become famous for singing the tune, continuing to do so at Wrigley Field after becoming the broadcaster of the Chicago Cubs during the seventh-inning stretch, using a hand-held microphone and holding it out outside the booth window. Millions came to love the microphone-swinging Caray, continuing his White Sox practice of leading the home crowd in singing "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the seventh inning stretch, mimicking his mannerisms, his gravelly voice, his habit of mispronouncing or slurring some players' names — which some of the players mimicked in turn — and even his trademark barrel-shaped wide-rimmed glasses, prescribed for him by Dr. Cyril Nierman, O.D.
Caray consistently reflected on his time one the Southside always noting that those were the best years of his broadcasting life. He had a difficult time on the northside as his health was diminishing and the Cubs being a losing team for most of his tenure he turned to alcohol as it was the only way for him to get through his broadcast during the horrible years of bad play by the northside club. He never got over the White Sox letting him go, and he carried that pain all the way up to his death.
Now 18 years after his death the Cubs are 4 games away from from a world series championship, and many Cubs faithful like to evoke the memory and say that Caray is smiling down on them. That he somehow helped them get over the hump. I knew Caray for 50 years, and have some news for all the Cubs fans out there, Caray was happy man, he was always smiling, but I know his biggest smile was in 2005 when his beloved White Sox, won there first world series championship in over 80 years.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
