While many schools use bake sales and candy sales to raise money for their athletic teams, Stockbridge High School had a very different approach.

Many former students of Stockbridge High School remember the days when former teacher, Mr. Ladd would help the cross country and basketball teams raise money with beef stick sales. "Get your beef sticks," was a common phrase to hear in between going to classes and during lunch (quote from anonymous SHS student).

Beef sticks, in the eyes of many, are just easier to do business with. No longer do students worry about messes caused by condiments, utensils and plates were no longer needed and the beef sticks have a lengthy amount of time before they lose appeal and become inedible (according to SHS students and staff).

While candy and chocolate bars are filled with large amount of high fructose corn syrup and carbohydrates, each beef stick is great for promoting a low-carb and high protein diet to help power you through your day. Each beef stick is packed with iron and zinc, along with other minerals that improve overall performance (ezfund.com). In short, beef sticks are a healthy alternative to sugary snacks.

The manufacturer of "Slim Jim" (beef stick provider), is owned by ConAgra Foods, a company based in Chicago, IL (U.S.). Ladd and Sean Connolly, CEO of ConAgra Foods, came into contract together April, 2015, while Connolly became CEO, Ladd branched out to create another product line of beef sticks just for young athletes. Though the product line has not launched, details have been released on the ConAgra website (conagrafoods.com) detailing new line, including locations that will soon carry the products. One location Ladd was hoping to carry once released, is the local Sunoco gas station called owned and operated by Mugg & Bopps (201 S Clinton St, Stockbridge, MI), which is located in the heart of Stockbridge, MI, just across from the town hall. Many Stockbridge area students pass through Mugg & Bopps nearly every day for after school snacks; Ladd predicts that by placing his product right into the hands of young athletes of Stockbridge, sales will help stimulate the local economy.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
