A BIRDWATCHER claims he spotted a great white shark lurking in the waters near Burntisland. Brian Mellow, 59, was looking out from the harbour wall when he claims he saw a large fin heading towards the shore.

The grandfather-of-two thought it was a basking shark but as it approached the rocks a wave crashed over the animal, revealing the full profile of the creature.

He claims he was left gobsmacked when he realised it was a six-metre-long great white - but sadly only had his binoculars not a camera.

Mr Mellows has has urged fishermen to take care warning them: "You're going to need a bigger boat".

He said after spotting the shark he called out to his fellow bird watchers but they were simultaneously distracted by a rare bird.

When they looked back the beast had disappeared into the waves last Sunday.

Life-long bird watcher Mr Mellows, who has seen many kinds of sharks, is warning fishermen to watch out.
The leakage technician for a water company said: "We were sea watching, probably about 30 of us, and it was about 7.45am.

"I saw this fin coming towards the rocks at about 300 yards offshore. There are three sets of rocks at high tide, and at low tide they get bigger.

"I saw this fin coming up and thought it must be a basking shark. But when the wave came up I saw the whole profile of the shark.

"It was just like you see on the surfers' photos. I said 'crikey!' - the size of it.
"It just wasn't the right profile for a basking shark at all. It was a great white.

He continued: "The more I thought about it the more I became sure it wasn't another kind of shark.

"I've seen other sharks before and it wasn't a basking shark, or a mako shark or a porbeagle.

"Every time you go there at low tide there are about six to ten seals resting on the rocks.
"So I'm thinking 'hell, perhaps it's hanging around there'. It's a good source of food.

"I was thinking perhaps I should tell someone like the local fisherman because they are going to need a bigger boat.

"There might well be evidence there. There might be seals with great chunks out of them.

"I think it was probably about six or seven metres long."
One of the UK's leading shark experts described Mr Mellows as "a good witness" - and said he could not rule out the suspected great white sighting.

Richard Peirce, a former chairman of The Shark Trust, said he had interviewed Mr Mellows and would log the sighting in his files.

The author of The UK Great White Shark Enigma said today: "I have investigated nearly 100 claimed sightings of Great White sharks in UK waters in the last twenty years.

"I have spoken to Brian and been through his sighting in detail. As an experienced observer Brian is a good witness, and both myself and The Shark Trust would like to thank him for coming forward with details of this sighting.

"Brian is clear that what he saw was not a Basking shark, and was 5-6 metres in length.

"Unfortunately he only saw the shark for about four seconds and was not able to get a photo, so no positive I.D. can be made."From the information given to me, I certainly can't confirm that Brian saw a Great White shark.

"However, I will not be placing this report in the junk end of my file!"

He added: "UK waters are home to over 30 shark species, and while there are no confirmed sightings of Great Whites, there is compelling anecdotal evidence, and there have never been any incidents involving claimed Great Whites that have threatened humans."

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
