It is most likely because of one or more of the following reasons :

Somewhere in their heart they know (or maybe they don't know) that you are a better person, but they still try to speak of your flaws so as to get attention or following, of people who are also jealous of you or your achievements; or of the people who also hate you
It is in there nature to b***h about others.
They don't have the guts to speak up, in your face
Just to spread rumours
Are comfortable sharing their thoughts with their friends only
Have the habit to complain about almost everything or everyone

So, no matter whatever be the case, I'd suggest you to do an introspection, never ever overthink (if you'll overthink, you'll be falling in their trap. It'll not be a constructive introspection then). Overcome such flaws, if you also feel that it is true. This way you'll become a better person and would consider such things as a positive criticism rather than degrading remarks. Eventually it is you who'll be benefitted from this, not them. On the other hand it'll become their habit to complain about people.

Maybe years later they'll remember only what they said, the perception they always had and the person they complained about, and maybe they won't see through that perception; the person you will be.

But you should be more concerned about yourself rather than what they would think. Sooner or later they won't even be in contact (that's what happens if they aren't really close friends of yours, unless you work together in which case it'll take either you or that person to switch jobs). Things that make you different are the things that take you further in life. And worrying about what people may say/think is the attitude that'll never get you anywhere.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
