Trump Calls on Congress to Hold a Constitutional Convention

President Donald Trump has called on Republicans in Congress to hold a Constitutional Convention in order to rewrite and dismantle our Bill of Rights.
Amid constant attacks from the media, the President has come to the conclusion that certain rights such as free speech and free press need to be curtailed. Both fall under the First Amendment, which currently reads, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
To most, the Constitution is the ultimate authority and protector of our guaranteed freedoms as Americans. However, it should be noted that the Constitution is a living document that can be changed and interpreted in many different ways. 1787 was the last time we had a Constitution Convention in the United States that resulted in the current draft. Amendments have been added over centuries, most recently the 27th Amendment officially ratified in 1992.
President Trump is looking to do something truly remarkable in calling a convention to address issues he has with freedom of religion, press, and speech most notably. To do this he will need support from 2/3rds of Congress and 3/4ths of states (38). Republican governors are in place in 33 states and 25 of those have Republican control in the state legislature as well. On top of those numbers, 19 states have some form of Republican control in their state government. This means that 44 states have the Republican support needed to push for a Constitutional Convention.
Trump has recently been seen meeting with Wayne LaPierre at last week’s CPAC event leading some to believe changes to the 2nd Amendment could be coming soon. Labeling mainstream media organizations like CNN as “fake news” also sheds light on how the President and his team views the role of free press in America. Chief of Staff Reince Priebus is reported to have been in contact with the FBI regarding media driven stories about Trump’s ties to Russia in which he asked the bureau to discredit them.
While his supporters may see this as an opportunity to push their agenda, there is serious danger in having a Constitutional Convention. Former Supreme Court Chief Justice Warren Burger had this to say about it in 1988, “there is no way to effectively limit or muzzle the actions of a Constitutional Convention. The Convention could make its own rules and set its own agenda. Congress might try to limit the Convention to one amendment or one issue, but there is no way to assure that the Convention would obey. After a Convention is convened, it will be too late to stop the Convention if we don’t like its agenda.”
It seems as though Trump and his team lead by Steve Bannon revel in the type chaos that will ensue. What we don’t know yet is what the end game is or the repercussions that may come from the controversial call for a convention.

    whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
