2018 Winter Guard International Championships Relocates to Honolulu

July 3, 2017 (Dayton, Ohio): Winter Guard International today announced plans to relocate their 2018 International Championships Venue to the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Executive Director Ron Nankervis confirmed the move this morning.

"After several years of hearing complaints regarding the limited venues in the Dayton, Ohio, area, the decision was made to give the World Class membership what they wanted. This relocation to Honolulu will ensure that only that only the organizations that are financially most secure will be able to attend our World Championships. This will reduce the number of units in attendance and ensure that all competing guards will have the opportunity to perform in the main arena."

Located on the campus of the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the Center is home to Rainbow Warriors Basketball and Volleyball and has also hosted the Miss Universe Pageant.

"There is no better venue available to us that combines both a quality experience for all attending units and Executive Board members while also ensuring a reduction in the number of units in attendance," said Nankervis. "Our Percussion and Winds championships will remain housed at the Dayton Arena."

The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
