Augusta National to Become Muni Golf Course

Augusta, GA - The Augusta City Commission voted 6-4 to invoke eminent domain over the Augusta National Golf Club Thursday and vowed to turn the world's most famous private club into a municipally-run public course.

Mayor Hardie Davis Jr. said, "In this day and age, we can't have a private club like this refuse to open its doors to the citizens of Augusta. I applaud the commission for having the courage to do this."

Reaction from the golf world was swift.

"I just hope that the Masters continues to be one of the preeminent tournaments in the world," said six-time Masters champion Jack Nicklaus. "Of course, I will remain a member, but I draw the line at sleeping in my car overnight to get a tee time."

"I'm not sure what to think," said current Masters champion Sergio Garcia. "Obviously, it's a great benefit to the city of Augusta, but I guess this means I'll have trouble reserving a tee time for practice before the tournament. I just hope I don't get paired up with a couple of beginners...no offense intended at beginners, of course."

Mayor Davis said that there were other benefits to the city owning the club.
"We expect a lot of people to move into our town," he said, "which means the value of our homes should skyrocket dramatically. And let me be clear, we did not, repeat, did not take this action to solely increase the value of our homes. At least I didn't."

Negotiations are underway with the club to determine the fair market value of the property, which some experts said was worth over $100 million.

The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
