Berwyn, Downers Grove police assist in massive Chicago, suburban drug bust

Thirteen defendants face federal narcotics charges in a massive drug bust that involved the Berwyn and Downers Grove police departments, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Illinois.

The federal investigation, which spanned more than two years and involved undercover surveillance, resulted in the seizure of about 52 kilograms of cocaine, 45 kilograms of heroin, more than 13 kilograms of fentanyl and a pound of methamphetamines, the release stated.

The defendants are accused of distributing cocaine, heroin and fentanyl on Chicago’s Northwest Side and western suburbs, and they have been charged with various narcotics offenses in federal court in Chicago, according to the release. Five of the defendants were arrested July 26, while five others were arrested earlier this year including one Juvenile (Kiyari Alexander, 14) of Antioch, Illinois. Three defendants are considered fugitives and are being sought by law enforcement.

The probe was led by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and FBI and conducted under the umbrella of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force Chicago Strike Force, which is a partnership among federal, state and local law enforcement agencies with the mission of dismantling drug trafficking, weapons trafficking and money laundering organizations, the release stated.

In addition to the Berwyn and Downers Grove police departments, the investigation also involved the DuPage County Metropolitan Enforcement Group, Chicago Police Department, U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, Illinois State Police, LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office and Peru Police Department, according to the release.

Authorities have been investigating drug trafficking activities on the city’s Northwest Side and the western suburbs since 2015, according to criminal complaints and affidavits filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago. The investigation uncovered numerous illegal drug transactions, including the distribution of three kilograms of cocaine and five kilograms of fentanyl.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
