Following official release on Netflix of the movie Okja, directed by Bong Joon-Ho, which has already made headlines with its four-minute standing ovation during its premiere at the 70th Cannes Film Festival, we are bringing back the debate on how animals are treated from birth up until they land on our plates.
Meat takes a huge part in our diet. A study from www.planetoscope.com shows that in developed countries, around 80kg of meat are consumed per person per year and more than 40 of the world’s consumption of meat comes from pork.
Intensive livestock seems to be the only way to keep up with such a huge demand: breeding living beings only to slaughter them is not enough. We now have to put them under appalling conditions to produce as much meat as possible. One example made headlines in the U.K. when farmers had to de-beak chickens in order to avoid cannibalism, a behavior that can’t be found in the wild. Chickens are not the only one living under shameful conditions: pigs, cows, horses, fishes and sheeps are living in claustrophobic spaces and are now showing abnormal behaviors.
Then when these overfed creatures are ready for plating, they are brought to a rather bloody retirement house. Over the past few years, many scandals about abattoirs have surfaced. Apart from the Sanitary conditions in slaughterhouses that we covered last month, we received recent footage of showing pigs, cows, sheep and horses suffering in horrifying conditions as they are killed for their meat.
Distressingly, the video appears to show animals still fully awake and conscious of their surroundings as they are subjected to the painful and fatal procedures. We can also see pigs being gassed with carbon dioxide, squealing in desperation as they fight for air. It also appears that the pigs sometimes wake up after being “stunned” and are still conscious when their throats slit and they are hang up by the feet. And the list of horror goes on and on…
We can only hope that the movie, with its touching characters, intriguing story and shocking images, will educate people on how our meat is made and that slaughterhouses will change their ethics.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
