Educators and public policy advisors alike were alarmed at a recent study by the American Psychological Association that indicated that the IQ, or "intelligent quotient" of the average citizen in the United States has dropped to levels not seen since Woodrow Wilson was President of the United States. The study, published in the APA's journal The American Psychologist, attributed the drop in average IQ to three primary factors: (1) the rise of social media and its ability to immediately distribute false information to mass numbers of people incapable of telling truth from fiction, (2) increasing pressure from certain political parties to deny funding for scientific research and the accompanying denial of almost universally accepted scientific principles such as climate change, and (3) voter suppression efforts that have resulted in marginally-qualified political candidates being elected to office.

Antonio Puente, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington and President of the APA, voiced his concerns, stating, "This study is a wake-up call for our democracy. We run the risk of not only championing mediocrity across the board in education, government and the private sector, but also a persistent and growing lack of understanding of even the most basic tenets of how our nation and economy function." Dr. Puente further stated, "This is not just a psychology issue. This is the very future of our country. I cannot state strongly enough how concerned I am about our country's race to the bottom."

The average IQ range dropped from a high of 102 during the period 2010-16 to 86 during the most recent study. This placed the United States in a tie for 21st place on the international IQ rankings by country, equal to nations such as Kuwait and Tonga, but below nations such as Uzbekistan and Iraq. When asked about the study, US Secretary of Education Elisabeth "Betsy" DeVos voiced her concerns, stating, "This study only underscores the failed policies of the Obama administration, and how far President Trump now has to go to lead the country to greatness again." The APA will conduct its next IQ survey in 2018.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
