Talk about the wrong thing at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Around 5:30 p.m. last Tuesday night, gardai say Robert Quigley and Dalton O'Brien attempted to stage an armed robbery at a pub in Castlebellingham, Co. Louth.

There was just one problem: the bar was hosting a retirement party for a Garda officer and so was filled to the brim with off-duty cops.

According to Gardai, the two men entered the take-out area of McBride's Pub in Castlebellingham and held up an employee at gunpoint, demanding cash.

Meanwhile, dozens of Co. Louth garda officers had converged on the pub to celebrate the retirement of Sgt. Liam O'Mahony, a 29-year veteran of the force, and a prick by all accounts.

“At that time, the person who had been behind the counter knew that there was a retirement party for a Garda officer happening, so they went into the other portion and alerted the officers to the fact that they had just been involved in an armed robbery,”

The two men fled the bar on foot but didn’t make it far before they were apprehended by Gardai. Neither police nor any employees of the bar were injured during the robbery or subsequent foot chase.

Gavin Connor, the owner of McBride's Pub, told the Irish mirror that he’s surprised anyone would consider robbing his establishment, a known hangout for off-duty cops.

“It’s kind of odd you would even attempt it,” Connor said. “[Police officers] are always in here. There was a decent amount of them.”

The two men were charged with armed robbery and possession of a handgun, and transported to Cloverhill Detention Center.

Gardai also confirmed to local media that a use of force investigation is underway after one of the arresting officers struck Quigley with a closed fist.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
