Sociologists, psychologists, economists, and political scientists all agree that gender issues are a pressing concern in American society. Social scientists note that it is extremely important to acknowledge our differences, rather than denying them. According to this perspective, men and women bring different perspectives to life, providing a richness in viewpoints, styles of interaction, and problem solving strategies. We will be in a better position to advance as a society if we embrace these differences. Each gender can contribute in its own unique way. For instance, girls tend to be more sensitive to others’ preferences and less assertive. In contrast, boys tend to be more forceful and less emotionally attuned to others. As adults, women are often more skilled in emotional intelligence and organizational management whereas men tend to be more adept at negotiating and asserting themselves. By recognizing this diversity that exists among men and women, we can help build a sense of harmony amongst men and women.

In an example of one such experience, Elizabeth, a senior consultant at Deloitte, describes an incident in which she was asked to take on a role because she is a woman. “At first, I was a little hesitant because I questioned whether I was asked just because they needed a ‘token’ woman to add diversity to the team,” she shared. “But then, I realized that diversity is valuable and that men and women bring different perspectives to the table. For example, even as children, girls are often more organized and boys are often more decisive. At work, I think women tend to approach projects from a more cautious, thoughtful angle, whereas men tend to be more action-oriented and focus on getting results quickly.”

In addition, Alex, a mid-level manager at Ernst and Young, described how being more mindful of gender roles and differing perspectives has shaped the way he interacts with others at work. “In meetings, I’m used to seeing men, myself included, talk more than the women. I used to think this was just because men are often more assertive,” he said. “However, I’ve come to understand how many of my female colleagues are just more polite, but that can also make them seem less assertive. So, when I notice that female coworkers aren’t contributing, I try to create space for them to speak. Once that space is there, it’s important to step back and allow differing perspectives to be shared.”

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
