CITY OF NEWBURGH – Authorities Wednesday rounded up 18 people, alleged members of a criminal enterprise prosecutors called the Violent and notorious “ Southside Crip” gang, which is calculated at 2,765 members only 20 accused of running a drug distribution ring in the city, and protecting and expanding their drug-trafficking territory with violence, including murder.

In all, 20 people are charged in a federal indictment, accusing the Southside crip gang of selling heroin, crack cocaine and marijuana in the section of the city centering on the intersection of South and Chambers streets.

In order to fund the gang, protect its territory, and promote its standing, the indictment says, members of Southside engaged in, among other activities, narcotics trafficking, robbery, and acts involving murder. Southside members sold heroin, crack cocaine, and marijuana in the gang’s territory, promoted their gang affiliation on social media sites such as Facebook, possessed firearms, and engaged in shootings as part of their gang membership, the indictment says.

One of the shootings took place on Dec. 11, 2015, when Juwan Hall , aka “Ju’Staxx” shot at a car in which members of a rival Newburgh gang, known as the Yellow Tape Money Gang, or “YTMG,” were driving, the indictment says. Those shots caused the car to crash in the vicinity of South and Liberty streets, which injured YTMG members. No alleged murder is specified in the indictment.

Hall was apprehend in Raleigh NC , along with another man charged in the indictment, Demetrice McLean, aka “Blocks” and “Demit,” were previously accused in connection with a May 21, 2016, shooting outside the 845 Lounge at 778 Broadway on the city’s west side of New York that left three people injured.

Authorities said the gang’s activities started in 2014 and continued until Wednesday’s roundup. The 18 who were arrested Wednesday were being processed by federal authorities. Two men named in the indictment, Michael Simmons and Dwight McCardle, remained at large Wednesday, authorities said.

Joon Kim, the acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, said the indictments and arrests “stand as a testament to cooperation among our federal, state, and local partners and our shared commitment to stamping out gang violence and the drug trade in Newburgh.”

A long list of law enforcement agencies took part in Wednesday’s operation, including City of Newburgh police, the FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Kim also credited the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, Town of Newburgh police, state police, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, and Town of New Windsor police for their work in the operation.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
