CHESAPEAKE — Lori Ragland of Chesapeake, was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Wednesday afternoon after she was injured and her car was totaled by a pickup truck at Military Highway and George Washington Highway.

Officer Dana Smith was parked near a George Washington parking lot, just 200-feet from the intersection of Route 13 (Military Highway) when he heard what sound like an accident very nearby and looked up toward the noise.

"I heard the screeching tires, saw smoke and car parts flying up in the air toward the traffic light at Route 13," said Smith. "I didn't even get a chance to put on my seat belt before I was on scene to respond."

Smith said he called in the accident at 4:38 p.m.

He said Peter Mitchell, of Warren, Maine was driving a 2008 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck westbound on Route 13 when he crashed into Ragland's 2008 Dodge Charger sedan, which had the green light on George Washington and proceeded north toward Portsmouth.

"Witnesses said the truck went through the red light," said Smith.

The pickup truck collided with the crossing Charger, sending the sedan onto the lawn of the boat business. Smith said Ragland sustained a broken ankle, among other injuries, and was complaining of chest pain from impact with the Charger's steering wheel. He said her side air bag deployed in the crash.

Due to her injuries and his being so close to the scene, Smith said he and bystanders helped stabilize Ragland's broken ankle and other injuries while an ambulance and emergency medical services crew were en route. Chesapeake Fire Department also responded to the crash to render aid.

Mitchell was uninjured, and his air bags deployed as well.

Both the truck and car were totaled in the crash and towed away. Smith said as of Wednesday night, no charges had been filed in the crash.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
