It has become more and more popular over the past few years for British couples to elope to Southern Europe to complete there nuptials due to low prices and guaranteed sunshine in a magical setting. It is estimated that one in four couples are now jumping on a plane with there close family and friends and having a holiday at the same time as there wedding for the same cost as a one day wedding back in the week.

The region of Tuscany in Italy is a particularily popular location due to the glorious summer weather, good transport links and romantic scenery. The region has become so popular for Brits eloping that the local population has begun to protest as so often when foreigners rush into an area they see as cheap they end up ramping up the prices for the local people.

We spoke to Luigi Romano, a young man living in the City of Florence who is hoping to get married next year, "Its become so expensive and difficult to arrange dates for my wedding. A few years ago it would only cost a few thousand euros and I would have had the pick of dates in the summer months yet now I am struggling to find a free date and the only way to keep the costs down is to get married in the winter months!".

To help combat this and raise much needed funds for the local area the Regional Council of Tuscany has just passed a new piece of legislation to tax overseas couples who choose to get married in the area. Monica Barni, the Vice President of the Council, said "The tax is a real positive for our local people as it will raise much needed funds for the area and keep the costs down for local people wanting to get married. Whilst we encourage people from around the world to visit our beautiful home and to enjoy the breathtaking and romantic scenery we need to put the local people first as its there home".

The tax will be implemented immediately and will come into law on the 1st of September 2018. From this point foreign couples will be charged €5000 per wedding as a flat rate and then will have to pay a per head levy of €50. Sonia Peters from wedding-in-tuscany.com has said "It is incredibly disappointing that the Council has taken this decision and decided to implement it so swiftly. Many couples will not be able to afford this and won't be able to cancel their current plans so it will be a very difficult decision for them. We are yet to see any cancelled bookings yet but will be formally writing to all our customers this week to let them know of the impending charges".

We managed to speak to a couple getting married this weekend just outside of Florence to see if they would have still got married in Tuscany with the additional taxes. "We always wanted to get married in Tuscany due to the romantic rolling hills and glorious scenery however cost definitely came into our decision. With the new tax it would around €7500 to the cost of our wedding which would have meant that we would have had to cut down on the number of people attending or ask the guests to make a contribution.....thankfully we are one of the lucky ones and we will spend the tax money on our honeymoon instead".

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
