Coalition of Human Rights Group Letter to the Liberian Government.

September 25, 2018

His Excellency George Weah
President of the Republic of Liberia
Care of Mr Sam Mannah
Press and Public Affairs Officer
Dear President Weah:

Your election and the peaceful transition of power in Liberia was a historic moment for your nation. During the campaign, you referenced your “clean slate” of never being involved in Liberia’s civil wars. We urged you at that time to seize this moment and the goodwill you have generated to finally bring justice and accountability to the countless victims of Liberia’s fourteen-year armed conflict.
The undersigned human rights organizations encouraged your administration to fulfill Liberia’s obligations to investigate and prosecute wartime atrocities. The establishment of the Liberian Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was an important start. The prosecution of former United Liberation Movement of Liberia for Democracy ( ULIMO) commander Mohammed Jabbateh, convicted in a U.S. court for immigration crimes related to his alleged wartime atrocities, has raised hope for justice for war victims. This year we’ve seen the trials of former Defense Minister of Charles Taylor’s National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL), Tom Woewiyu, in the United States; NPFL Commander Martina Johnson in Belgium; ULIMO Commander Alieu Kosiah in Switzerland; and Agnes Reeves Taylor in the United Kingdom.
You had the opportunity to ensure justice for those who suffered some of the most serious crimes of the first and second civil wars.  These crimes, which include summary executions, torture, rape, sexual slavery, and the use and recruitment of child soldiers, not to mention mass atrocities, such as the massacres at Carter Camp and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, where hundreds of innocent civilians were killed, cannot go unpunished. Despite Liberia’s legal obligations under international law to investigate and prosecute perpetrators of grave abuses, and the TRC’s recommendation to do so, Liberia has yet to hold a single person to account for these crimes.
We urged you to make accountability a priority for your administration and ensure the protection of Liberian human rights defenders, particularly those working on accountability initiatives. By addressing the problems of impunity in Liberia, and holding the perpetrators of civil-war-era crimes accountable, we beloved you were in a position to give the people of Liberia – the people who put you in office – the justice they deserve. Unfortunately, we have over the last few months of your presidency noticed your hesitance to enforce this mandate and per recent account from victims and citizens in Liberia it is clear that you have ignored our suggestions and your government is now going after journalists, protestors and peace loving Liberians. Barely two months into your presidency we received video documentation of citizens of Liberia you labeled enemies of the state and also witnessed the abuse of John David, Murder of a local journalist Brown, attest of media personalities of front page Africa and billions of dollars missing. While we’ve opened a channel for dialogue it is also our responsibility to speak on behalf of human fights issues. Upon further investigation and conclusion, we would like to inform you that the following organizations listed below will take legal actions against your government and demand the United Nations Security Council organize a special session to consider further sanctions against your government.

Sincerely,

Despite the ruination her anger has caused, Anna says she has no regrets. "I actually wish I knew I had this ability sooner!" Anna laughs. whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
