In the final game of the 2017 season for Mona Shores 8th Grade team, Quarterback Landon Thalman was attempting to lead his team down the field to tie the game vs Zeeland East back up before heading into the locker room. He took the snap, threw the bubble route to his receiver and CRACK! His collarbone was shattered. His season was over. The Sailors eventually lost to Zeeland East 57-39 to finish the season with a dismal 3-3 record for the 2nd straight year. Immediately, Thalman knew he needed to come back strong for his Freshman season next year. Little did he know, he would not be the quarterback next year. A few weeks after the Zeeland East game, a kid from Littleton, Colorado named Mark Konecny had moved in. His dad had went to Mona Shores High School years before and played for the Eagles, Jets and Dolphins in the NFL. Mark was very hyped up, and everyone was excited for him to be that guy that turned us from 3-3 to conference championships. As everyone hyped up Konecny, everyone seemed to forget about Thalman just as fast, our leader for the last 2 seasons. Going into the freshman season, Konecny vs Thalman was supposed to be an intense QB Competition but instead, Mark was automatically given the job, while Landon was asked to move to slot. Thalman was hurt and would do anything for the opportunity to play QB again. Konecny was a pretty good running quarterback and a decent passer, but did not live up to the hype he was given. Ironically, in Week 7, Thalman got his shot. Mona Shores Freshman was playing Jenison, and the game was tied at 14 with 1 minute to go. Konecny ran a read option play and kept the ball. Then, he was slammed from behind and CRACK! He broke his collarbone, and he was out for the season. The Sailors sat at 4-2-1 and needed to win their final 2 games against Muskegon and Fruitport to win the conference championship. Thalman was confident that he could prove himself. A week later, it was game day, time to play Mona Shores biggest rival, Muskegon! The year before in 8th Grade, the Sailors got pounded by the Big Reds 48-8. Mona Shores was hungry for revenge, as first year Head Coach Steve Swanker was seeking his first signature win. The Big Reds were 6-0 and if they won this game, they would win the conference championship. Wide Reciever and Cornerback Mike Meekhof went up to Thalman in the locker room and asked him if he was nervous. He confidently said no. He told Meekhof he's been waiting for this moment for a long time. It was 5 minutes to game time and Mona Shores Freshman head coach Steve Swanker stood in the front of the room to address his team. "They might be more talented than you, they might be faster than you, but I know for a fact they did not work as hard as we have, everything we have done in the summer is going to pay off for us right here and I know our quarterback has a broken collarbone, but for right now, Landon (Thalman) is our quarterback, and he's ready! LETS GO!" On the first drive of the game for Muskegon, they fumbled and it was scooped up by Mona Shores to start them out at the 21. On the first play of their drive, Thalman completed a pass to Diego Pena down to the 1 yard line. On the next play, Jeff Lenartowicz, arguably the Sailors best player, punched it in to give the Sailors an early 8-0 lead. Then, when Muskegon got the ball back, the Sailors forced a 3 and out and the Big Reds were forced to punt. However, on the punt, the ball sailed over Big Red punter Dominic Sugin's head, and he was tackled at the 25, giving the Sailors excellent field position again. 2 plays later, Thalman completed a pass to Elijah Johnson, putting the Sailors up 16-0 before Muskegon could even blink. Mona Shores would not score again. The Big Reds started to come back and had a chance to win with a touchdown trailing 16-12, but it was not to be as Damari Foster's incomplete pass on 4th down with seconds to go sealed the deal. The Sailors had done it and Thalman was a hero, as they won 16-12 for their first ever victory over Muskegon! But Mona Shores could not lose focus, as there was a huge game the next week. Sure, 0-8 Fruitport doesn't sound tough, but a win meant a conference championship. As the Sailors rode the bus over to Fruitport's stadium, defensive line coach Nick Davros spoke to the team. He said "I know Fruitport is bad, but you cannot lose focus. If you guys lose, everything we have done this season means nothing, you lost, your losers." Mona Shores pounded Fruitport 58-8 behind Thalman's 3 touchdown passes. The Sailors won the OK Black Conference Championship, and in a matter of 2 weeks, Thalman had became the leader of the team again and the hero that had lead them to their goals. As Konecny heals from his collarbone injury, Thalman is working hard in the weight room, making sure that Konecny cannot take his spot again.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
