Excessive alcohol use can wreak havoc on your life, your health, and even your appearance. One such side effect can be shown in the connection between alcohol and hair loss. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic believe they have found a direct link. According to Dr. Michael Thornburg, "There is a direct and undeniable link to the increase in the use of alcohol among women and the significant increase in hair loss that we are seeing in the female population across the nation". According to their research, since 1990, there has been a 38 increase in reported alcohol use among women in the United States. During that same time, there has been a 31 increase in the reporting and treatment of hair loss among this same population.

So, why can alcohol cause hair loss? The relationship between alcohol and hair loss is complex, but two of the biggest reasons heavy drinkers, which is defined as someone consuming more than three single drinks per week, experience hair loss is because they don’t eat the right nutrients, or they can’t absorb them properly. Basically, when you drink excessively, you consume empty calories with no nutritional benefits. This is particularly true if you primarily consume hard alcohol. As you consume so many of your calories in the form of alcohol, you’re probably not focusing on maintaining a nutritious, well-balanced diet in the process.

Other ways alcohol and hair loss are related include:

*Drinking dehydrates you, which can damage the health of your hair. When you’re dehydrated, it can make existing hair follicles very dry and brittle, which makes them more likely to fall out. This dehydration can also cause dandruff.

*Alcohol causes blood sugar spikes, which have been linked to pattern baldness.

*When you drink excessively you may sleep, but it’s not quality, healthy sleep. When you don’t sleep enough or sleep well it can increase stress, and stress is linked to hair loss. There is actually a condition called telogen effluvium or TE, that refers to stress-induced hair loss. When this happens, your hair follicles don’t replenish themselves as they should, but they still continue shedding.

If you’re worried about alcohol and hair loss, the best thing you can do is start cutting down on your drinking or stop altogether today.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
