Sols Pipe and Steel will close its plant in Monroe, La later this year, The Advocate newspaper reports.

The move will impact more then 200 workers as the company closes the Monroe plant to consolidate operations with another plant in Alvarado, Texas, the newspaper reports. The plant is expected to close in late winter.

A plant spokesman told the newspaper he was not sure how many of the 120 workers in Monroe, La will be eligible for unemployment benefits.

Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo to release the following statement this morning following the closure announcement:

Today we learned that Sols Pipe and Steel will close its Monroe based plant later this year. The timing and proximity of these closures is disheartening news for our residents who’ve been impacted, but we realize that cutbacks and closures are part of a changing economy and supply and demand. Thanks Mr. Sols and Jackie Rosenburg for bringing a remarkable company to this area bringing forth a number of jobs for years.

The company’s leadership has demonstrated sensitivity with their employees who their about to be given several months’ notice regarding their plans to shutter the plant. As a result, many of their employees will transfer to other local businesses if openings while others have to be signed up with diversity staffin while seeking unemployment.

Our collective goal continues to be to help everyone find new jobs and careers here in the Monroe Louisiana Area. Our efforts to support Georgia Pacific employees are well underway, and it is our intention to consolidate our resources to assist all citizens in need of employment due to recently announced layoffs.

Our economy has taken a hit, but Ouachita Parish remains resilient. Our focus must be on addressing the needs of families and communities through these immediate transitions, and engaging on the broader implications in the weeks and months ahead.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
