Lawrence - A 16-year-old driver could face criminal charges after a car crash left one passenger dead and critically injured two others.

Police suspect speed and alcohol were factors in the crash around 5:30 Sunday morning on Indian Lake Road just south of 79th Street. The car struck a tree before catching fire, trapping the victims inside.

"I heard the tires and the big crash," said 15-year-old Alex Solenburg. The crash happened in her family's front yard. "It's horrifying."

"Mass confusion, the car was on fire, people were screaming," said John Solenburg.

Then Alex saw the four victims.

"My age. I mean, I know them," she said.

17-year-old Malcolm Wilson was found dead in the backseat of the car. Lawrence Police say the three survivors were taken to area hospitals in critical condition, including 21-year-old Joshua Stone, who was ejected from the passenger seat, 18-year-old Ricardo Tavera, who had to be extricated from the vehicle. Stone has since been upgraded to fair condition at Methodist Hospital

Police say the 16-year-old driver got out of the car on his own. He could be facing criminal charges.

"The Fatal Alcohol Crash Team has come out in case there is alcohol involved," said Lawrence Police Lt. Steve York. "We have been contacted by somebody who was actually out here walking a dog and they say they saw the vehicle and it appeared to be going at an excessive speed for this road."

Investigators say the car was headed southbound on Indian Lake Road when the driver lost control, crossed the double yellow line and crashed into the tree.

"They were airborne for a little while before they landed," John Solenburg said.

"I mean, it's a straight road. You would have to be drunk to have something like that happen," Alex Solenburg said.

The car knocked down and burned a fence along with the trees it landed against when it caught fire. While the car itself may have been towed away, Alex Solenburg says what she saw is a lesson that will never go away.

"Seeing how this stuff happens, I've seen it and I don't think it's worth it at all," she said.

"As the firemen were still retrieving people out of the car, I walked up to her and she said, 'I'll never drink and drive'," John Solenburg said.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
