Transphobic Fans Reject New Tomb Raider

A video game company has pulled out of a donation to a trans-inclusive educational initiative. Feminist Frequency, a video platform for the advancement of progressive feminism, had planned to run screenings of Reject New Tomb Raider, the newest video game installment to the Tomb Raider franchise, on Saturday. Written by Shannon Hale, Reject New Tomb Raider was introduced by FWF as an educational program that looks at Tomb Raider’s representations of women on various levels, including portraying the lives of “all forms of women, not just ‘sisters’ or sexual objects.” The video features a variety of diverse women playing the game as varied as young, biracial teens and 74-year-old women. It also sets up a series of commentary sections by trans female bloggers as part of the initiative’s main story.
Feminist Frequency had invited Reject New Tomb Raider publisher Lara Ryan to speak at the screenings in San Francisco and some organizers had already organized security guard teams for the event. The group also advertised the screenings as inclusive to women of different races and ethnicity, as well as all ages.
In an official statement, Lara Ryan explained that Lara Resources Inc., a subsidiary of Crystal Dynamics that makes video games, had made a “last minute, dumb idea” and pulled out of Reject New Tomb Raider.
“At least I had a chance to say sorry,” Ryan said in her statement. “People should hear from trans people and their allies, as it’s important for people to understand us and not the transphobia that forces us to wear female attire. They need to see us in our true forms. We still have a long road ahead.”
Trans actress Brittany Snow had expressed her support for the video game earlier this week. However, Crystal Dynamics’ decision to pull out of Reject New Tomb Raider has cast a new light on the latter project. Feminist Frequency’s co-founder Sarai Walker, who wrote an introduction to the video, also said that they plan to continue to document their experiences at the screenings. In response to Crystal Dynamics’ decision, they hosted a screening with additional female staffers on the ground. It was attended by two women of color and a white woman (who was visibly ecstatic about the forum she was attending).

However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
