Star Wars fans know that a franchise as massive as Star Wars is likely to offend some viewers.
The Saga has been plagued by controversy throughout its 40-year history. After the controversy surrounding The Last Jedi, some Star Wars fans have now decided that the next trilogy must present a more diverse cast.
Star Wars director Rian Johnson recently revealed some details of the series’ latest directions in a candid interview.
“The next three movies are going to be all people of color, from top to bottom,” he said. “I was lucky enough to get all different kinds of people for this cast: a Mexican-American writer/director, a black actor [John Boyega], a Native American actress [Kelly Marie Tran], a white actor [Benicio Del Toro], and two Vietnamese guys who are incredible, an Aryan Australian man, and so we get a really cool blend of people.”
“It was all by virtue of one thing: we were casting all these roles and there were so few,” Johnson explained. “The desire was to cast everyone from top to bottom in an all-inclusive way, and our casting directors did an amazing job of approaching people and making them aware that it’s an all-inclusive movie. But I also think it’s because of the cultural resonance.”
“I think Star Wars is going to go the same way as comic books and video games went,” Johnson continued. “That’s the common ground now that is standing out, especially in America, on television and in film: women, people of color, queer people, gay people, and people with disabilities. I think the whole genre is built on the same sh*t, and this will be the next step.”
The Star Wars creator, George Lucas, set about releasing the Star Wars prequels in 2005, a second saga some felt was not a true continuation of the original trilogy. Following complaints from fans, Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015 attempted to correct the Star Wars Prequels by casting a diverse cast. The shocking turn of events saw lead actress Daisy Ridley face online abuse. She explained:
“The prequels just get a bad rep, but we never had a problem casting women of color. We were like, ‘Oh well, why not? We’ve got one!’”
Star Wars fans have always been sensitive about the fans’ favorite trilogy being associated with bigotry and racism. Countless fans were disappointed, yet thrilled, at Rey’s childlike origins, not realizing that they had been tricked in every film to date. Rogue One director Gareth Edwards, speaking with SlashFilm, addressed the diversity gap:
“I’m an English director, you know? And I don’t know that I would…The plot [of Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back] is a lot more socially relevant to how people were feeling in the mid-1980s. I haven’t had the hankering to film those kinds of stories.”
It is sure to take a while for such projects to have a presence in the film industry, but John Boyega has seen Star Wars skyrocket to the top of his dreams since making his debut in the Star Wars films.
“I am dying to meet Donald Glover. I just want to be his buddy,” he said. “I never thought in my wildest dreams I would be speaking to John Wick about advice. This is a dream come true.”
But do you see all of these casting changes as a positive? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
