It comes to a great shock to those in Holcomb after the murders of the Clutter family were found and sentenced. The Clutter family was one of the most influential families in the county, which is why it comes to a great shock to everyone why this well-loved family was murdered on November 15, 1959. Herb and Bonnie Clutter and daughter Nancy Clutter and son Kenyon Clutter were killed in the middle of the night in their family home and discovered after friends and neighbors noticed that they didn’t attend their usual Sunday service. This caused suspicion to friends of the family and first attempted to call them before later arriving at their house. The Clutter family was very much involved in a lot of community activities and very well lovable which is why over 1,000 people attended their funeral service.

Their deaths are described as very gruesome, gory, and horrific details. Herb was found with his throat slit and was shot in the head. Bonnie, Nancy, and Kenyon were tied and shot. Herb who was 48 was a farmer was well known and loved by the community and being very religious. Bonnie who was 45 had been dealing with mental issues and known to not be in her right state most of the time. Nancy, 16, was a very popular girl who attended high school and Kenyon, 15, who also attended high school and also well-loved by others. Herb and Bonnie also had two other daughters who were not present at the time since they were both older and starting their own lives with their respective partners. Herb was known as someone rich and had bought life insurance the night before his passing worth over $40,000 that was purchased in case of an emergency.

Detective Alvin Adams Dewey was assigned to this case by the Kansas bureau of investigation. The only leads that were able to find were that murder had to be done by two since it would have been more possible to have been a two-man job. Later after looking at the photos taken at the crime scene was that the phone lines were cut, a bloody shoe print next to Nancy was found, and a car tire print outside. He wasn’t able to find any possible suspects who would have murdered or had a reason to murder the Clutter family. It wasn’t until six weeks later it was announced that the possible suspects of the family were arrested and taken into custody. Richard Eugene Hickock and Perry Edward Smith were found in Las Vegas after getting leads by a former inmate who had to confess to telling Perry about the Clutter family having a safe in their house after working for Herb’s farm. Their two suspects confessed to killing the family.

While confessing they did admit to having stolen less than 50 dollars and found that there was no safe filled with money as described by the inmate as previously stated Herb bought life insurance the night before. Dick and Perry knew of each other since they meet in prison while serving time for other crimes committed. They were both known to have issues dealing with family affairs. After being arrested while in Las Vegas for passing bad checks and taken to Kansas, they wait in jail until they had their court date. While in court, the jury only had about 30 mins before giving a verdict of guilty. The Judge gave them the death sentence and sentence both death by hanging. While they wait they will serve time in federal prison waiting for their fate.

This came as a great shock to the family and friends as well as the community, since this murder took a toll on them, not knowing who were the murders. Evidently, the Clutter family was well-loved by the community and is missed dearly by those who ever meet the family or had known about them. Hopefully, they can move on from this tragedy that was caused abruptly. This is another story that is caused by greed and discontentment with someone’s lives and destroyed a family who didn’t deserve what happened to them.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
