A local Rhode Island teen got another chance at life thanks to an organ donor. Local advocates hope that his story will encourage more people to register to be organ donors as the state’s registration ranks as the lowest in the country.

Samuel Keeler, 19, of Cumberland, Rhode Island was told by doctors that if he did not get a new heart within a month he would not live to see his 20th birthday, "It was the worst day of my life. I didn't know what to do, I didn't know how to tell the people I loved. What are you supposed to do when a doctor tells you that," say's Samuel.

Luckily for Sam he only had to wait a week until a match was found. “Overwhelmed definitely to know that he got one so fast with such little time,” said Sam’s father. “I remember getting the call from the doctors, I just started crying.” His family is truly grateful for the efforts of the doctors, but most importantly, they’re grateful for the organ donor that helped save Sam’s life.

“Sam has been through so much in the last two plus weeks and to think the only reason he is still here is because of someone else’s donation is inspiring. His life will continue on through the selfless act of somebody making that decision,” said Cheryl Wilder, Samuel’s mother.

Since his surgery last Thursday Samuel has been in the hospital continuing his long recovery. He is most grateful for all the support he has gotten, “All the family that have visited me, it means a lot. I have everyone I want here by my side except for one person but that’s my fault,” said Samuel. In fact he even hopes that one day he’ll have the chance to meet the family of the donor that saved his life.

Sam, his family, and The Rhode Island Department of Health encourage everyone to register as a organ donor, because as was the case with Samuel you have the ability to save someones life.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
