Meet Birmingham’s next Drag star, Aphrodite. Drag queen and club kid Aphrodite sits down OX Team, discussing her makeup inspiration looks, how she got into drag and where she sees herself in the future.
Hey APHRODITE! How did you get into drag?
I know most queens don’t like to hear this, but it’s true. The reason I got into drag was because of RuPauls Drag Race, which inspired many drag queens. I haven’t been doing it for 20 years like most, but I’ve been educating myself on my particular style and Interest, along with drag culture and fashion.
How did you get your drag name?
The name Aphrodite comes from Aphrodite of Greek mythology, she is a queen of love and beauty, which is what Interested me and made me pick that drag name. The name isn’t too feminine or too masculine and fits perfectly with my drag persona. Aphrodite is quite a conceptual who can be a little boyish.
What does drag mean to you?
The honnor to connect with my audience is a dream come true, almost like winning a crown. I hope my drag can help them in some way and that’s the award for me. I know it’s sounds a little cheesy, but helping people is more satisfying. And I’m not just saying that because it’s a cool thing to say, i learnt it from my mother. I think the work ethic in my family was very important, like if you plant the seed and nature it with time then it’ll grow into something amazing - wether that’d be acting, singing, drag, etc.
Where do you draw inspiration for your looks and performances?
Inspiration comes from all over the place, other drag queens, other designers, other artists, other performers, etc. It’s mainly in the world of fashion, since it’s so versatile. Coco Chanel once said “fashion is not only in what we wear but in our surroundings, such as the sky, the street, it’s everywhere!”. I stand by the quote.
What is your favourite movie of all time?
Oh that’s easy. Spirited away. Do I even need to explain? If you don’t know, GET TO KNOW!
You’re very fashionable, who are your fashion icons?
Well thank you. I take slot of inspiration from icons such as Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen, Gareth Pugh, and the whole haute couture scene.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
