In an autonomous province in the north of Italy pupils can decide themselves at what time they want to start school in the morning.
The South Tyrolian legislation allows high school students to make their own choices on when to start school. They just have to fill in a form and state why they want to start school at a later time than usual. For legal reasons an approving signature from the parents and from the head of the school is necessary for minors - pupils over 18 can decide autonomously. Students with negative grades do not qualify for this educational "experiment".
The new law is based on the concept of flexible working, also known as flextime or flexitime, where workers are not tracked for the time they spend at work, but for their results. Statistics show a significant increase on a productivity and motivation level, a better work-life balance and a significantly lower stress level. Mr Achammer, the South Tyrolian Parlamentarian in charge of school and education, was highly confident that innovative concepts like this can help increase educational standards and he is sure that South Tyrol will soon act as a role model for the rest of Europe.
Applying is easy: students download the respective forms from the homepage of the local education authority, or receive them at the schools' offices.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
