01.02.2020 – As the Norwegian Minister of Education and Research, Jan Tore Sanner, talked to the Norwegian government about certain educational changes for Norwegian students at the middle- and high-school levels, known as “ungdomsskole” and “videregående skole” in Norway, he announced a startling revelation; that English will replace Norwegian as the official educational language within Norwegian schools by 2025
As both news-reporters like myself and other members of government were surprised to hear this announcement, Jan Tore Sanner explained his choice by stating the fact that current “higher-education” options in Norway, such as universities and so-called “høyskoler”, have already used English as the official educational language for close to 10 years. Therefore, he argues, the decision to replace Norwegian with English across “ungdomsskole” and “videregåendeskole” is only a natural progression of the already strong system of English education in Norway and that this:
“… would be happening anyways; we are simply speeding the process up a bit as we believe Norwegian students are ready for this next step in English education.”
Jan Tore Sanner also used a recent study from Språkrådet (the Language Council of Norway) in his arguments, stating that those who have learned and are competent in the English language have an 80 higher chance of finding a stable job. The study also revealed that as the majority of Norwegian citizens can already understand English, and globalization is making the world a “smaller place”, that understanding English is now far more important than understanding Norwegian even within Norway’s own borders.
Unsurprisingly, this shocking announcement has been met with both positive and negative reactions from every aspect of Norwegian society. The Minister of Education and Research, Jan Tore Sanner, says he has also received numerous letters from concerned parents about school “not being what it once was” and “Norwegian schools should be Norwegian”.
Still, there are those who also support the minister’s actions. The University of Oslo (UiO) for example has given a statement complimenting the changes to English education:
“The University of Oslo whole-heartedly supports Jan Tore Sander’s decision and wish both him and all future Norwegian students the best of luck on the topic of English education. We believe this is a big step towards being an official part of a worldwide globalization initiative to truly unify the world once and for all.”
Many speculate as to why politicians are trying to make Norway even more English than it already is. Some believe that Jan Tore Sander planned this announcement in cooperation with the Minister of International Development, Dag Inge Ulstein, who recently revealed that English will be given the official status of “Second Language”, otherwise known as “ESL”. This is a pretty big change, as while Norway has always scored highly on the EF English Proficiency Index (a survey used to measure how good the English speakers of a country might be), English has never been an official language. This means that while Norwegian will still be the most used and most common language in the near-future; English will now also be an alternative for those cases where learning Norwegian might not be wanted, needed or possible. Due to this strong interest in English education, and it’s new “official” status, some analysts are predicting that English will become the most spoken language in Norway by 2030, and that English might become the official language of Norway by 2050.
The Prime Minister has yet to give a comment on this new English focus, but she is expected to be heard from within a couple of days.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
