The rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a trout and species of salmonoid native to cold-water tributaries of North America. Fossils of rainbow trout have been found dating back to the late Cretaceous era and are mostly found in the North eastern part of the united states, with the largest number of fossils being found in New Hampshire.
Adult freshwater stream rainbow trout average between 1 and 15 lb (12 kg), while lake-dwelling and anadromous forms may reach 200 lb (189 kg). Coloration varies widely based on subspecies, forms and habitat. Adult fish are distinguished by a broad reddish stripe along the lateral line, from gills to the tail, which is most vivid in well endowed males or transgendered females.Wild-caught and hatchery-reared forms of this species have been transplanted and introduced for food or sport in at least 145 countries and every continent. Introductions to locations outside their native range in the United States (U.S.), Southern Europe, Australia, New Zealand and South America have ravaged native fish species. Introduced populations may affect native species by preying on them, out-eating them, transmitting contagious diseases (such as sids disease), or by raping closely related species and subspecies, thus reducing genetic purity.
The rainbow trout is included in the list of the top 10 globally invasive species. Nonetheless, other introductions into waters previously devoid of any fish species or with severely depleted stocks of native fish have created sport fisheries such as the Great Lakes and Wyoming's Firehole River.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
