The air was cold, bitter and sharp,
slapping at my numb tongue,
clawing at my cracked lips,
dancing down my throat
and sparking a fire in my already corrupted lungs.

Massenet managed to slither through the thick air,
it’s contorted tune rattling in my ears
before dulling,
calming,
quietening,
for the pass of the mail train.

A train whistle pierced the night,
it’s wheels hacking through the floorboards
and steam filtering through the cracks.
A solitary bottle rubbed against my fingertips,
and spun across the floor
until it stilled by the once clear window.

Paint chipped,
pains cracked,
curtains torn down in a frenzy.
There’s no privacy,
no corner to hide,
from that window,
spread eagle across the wall,
stretching further and further,
presenting the world beyond.
Beyond the glass,
beyond the letter R of Cramer and Co,
beyond the chimneys and bricks and bustle,
beyond... beyond all that happened,
beyond it all.

The night is still once more,
barring the distance sound of horse shoes
and the whirring of the machines.

My bag still lays open on the table,
my hat still strewn upon that chair,
with its lace yellow and arms worn
and cracking at the legs from wear the rats had been.

I shift,
the wood of the chair creaking,
the joints of my body protesting,
the moon behind the smoke still watching,
letting that paper fall to the ground,
as it had done so many nights ago.

Massenet is beginning to slow.

It’s all so distant,
so slow.

The last dregs still caked on my lips,
the last notes still swirling in my head,
the last inhale still fresh in my lungs,
as I emit a slurred, gargled whistle,
to the dying beat of a gramophone.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
