As of 13 March 2020, in the Isle of Man there have been 29 concluded tests and 1 confirmed cases.

There is currently 1 confirmed case of novel coronavirus in the Isle of Man.

We are now in the delay phase of our response to COVID-19. This entails significant changes to how we identify and manage potential cases of COVID-19. From today the public who display mild symptoms are being advised to stay at home (self-isolate) without any testing for COVID-19, regardless of travel history or contact with confirmed cases.

Anyone showing mild symptoms such as:

a continuous cough
or

high temperature
Should now self-isolate for seven days.

The geographic element of the case definition has now been removed.

If people who have travelled DO NOT have symptoms they DO NOT need to stay at home, regardless of their travel history.

Please refer to the Symptoms and Stay at Home guidance below for further advice.

This is in line with measures put in place in the UK this week to help combat the spread of COVID-19.

Public Health England (PHE) leads the response to new and emerging threats to health for all four nations of the UK and the Crown Dependencies - including the Isle of Man.

Health Protection staff within the Public Health Directorate are working with colleagues across our Department of Health and Social Care and across Government to ensure that we are implementing the PHE guidance, which is updated daily to reflect the rapidly evolving situation.

How coronavirus is spread
Because it's a new illness, we do not know exactly how coronavirus spreads from person to person.

Similar viruses are spread in cough droplets.

It's very unlikely it can be spread through things like packages or food.

How to avoid catching or spreading coronavirus
DO

wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds
always wash your hands when you get home or into work
use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available
cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze
put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards
try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell
DON'T

do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean
Treatment
There is currently no specific treatment for coronavirus.

Antibiotics do not help, as they do not work against viruses.

Treatment aims to relieve the symptoms while your body fights the illness.

You'll need to stay in isolation, away from other people, until you have recovered

Symptoms and Stay at Home Guidelines
What to do if you have symptoms
Stay at home for 7 days if you have either:

a high temperature
a new continuous cough
This will help to protect others in your community while you are infectious.

Do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital.

You DO NOT NEED to contact your GP or MEDs to tell them you’re staying at home.

We WILL NOT be testing people who are self-isolating with mild symptoms.

Emergency Warning signs
If you develop emergency warning signs for COVID-19 get medical attention immediately.

Emergency warning signs include*:

Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
New confusion or inability to arouse
Bluish lips or face
*This list is not all inclusive. Please consult your GP or MEDS Out of Hours service for any other symptoms that are severe or concerning.

Follow the advice within the Stay at Home Guidance section below.

Stay at Home Guidance

The main messages are:

By staying at home this action will help protect others in your community while you are infectious
plan ahead and ask others for help to ensure you can successfully stay at home
ask your employer, friends and family to help you to get the things you need to stay at home
stay at least 2 metres (about 3 steps) away from other people in your home whenever possible
sleep alone, if possible
wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds, each time using soap and water
stay away from vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions, as much as possible
you do not need to call your GP/MEDS to go into self-isolation. If your symptoms worsen during home isolation or are no better after 7 days, contact your GP/MEDS. For a medical emergency dial 999.

UK NHS Stay at home advice

Ending self-isolation
You should remain at home until 7 days after the onset of your symptoms.

After 7 days, if you feel better and no longer have a high temperature, you can return to your normal routine.

If you have not had any signs of improvement and have not already sought medical advice, you should contact your GP or MEDS.

A Cough may persist for several weeks in some people, despite the coronavirus infection having cleared. A persistent cough alone does not mean you must continue to self-isolate for more than 7 days.

Incapacity Benefit
Following the Health and Social Care Minister’s announcement on 13 March 2020 the Treasury Minister stated:

‘In order to support the changing health advice relating to coronavirus, on Tuesday 17 March 2020, I will be bringing forward legislation to enable individuals to claim incapacity benefit from day one if they cannot work when following advice relating to self-isolation.

‘Individuals can currently only self-certify their sickness for seven days, after which a medical certificate is required. I am proposing that this is temporarily extended to 14 days.

‘In addition to incapacity benefit, income support is also available for those who need additional financial support from day one. Anyone who is concerned or unsure of their entitlements should contact the Social Security Division directly on 685656, where staff will be pleased to help.’

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
