In a Wednesday morning press release, Governor Holcomb announced his administration's decision directing school corporations to register all students at their current grade level for the start of the 2020-21 school year. He cited poor participation in online schooling and lack of equal access to the internet as contributing factors.

In the press release, Dr. Jennifer McCormick said:
"Many of our children are falling behind during this time of unprecedented loss of in-school education. While we had hoped simply allowing for 20 days of missed instruction would be sufficient, it is apparent many Hoosier students will miss much more than that as this quarantine continues. Therefore, in order to be most fair to all students and to keep everyone on the same starting point in the curriculum, we will simple re-start this academic year beginning fall 2020."

While this decision avoids restructuring curriculum state-wide, some parents are concerned that their children will be frustrated by having to repeat a grade. Losantville parent Larry Haskins says, "I'm afraid my son will feel like he's being held back because he didn't do well enough."

Other parents, like Kate Robinson of Gary, Indiana, are relieved. "We have been having such a hard time adjusting to online schooling. I wasn't ready for Sadie [8th grader] to graduate middle school. I love her teachers this year and am glad she will get the chance to spend more time with them as she gets more time to prepare for high school."

With the corona virus pandemic yet to reach its peak here in Indiana, much remains unclear about the re-boot of this academic year. Channel 45 will update this story as details emerge.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
