Michigan Gov. Whitmer extends stay-home order past July 1

LANSING — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has shelved plans to reopen the economy but will have more detail by Friday.

“I want to be clear, we will likely need another extension of the stay home, stay safe order,” even after the July 1st deadline. Whitmer said.

Whitmer said the state is seeing encouraging signs after recording 34,000 positive cases of coronavirus and more than 2,800 deaths. She warned that reopening the state too soon could prompt a second wave of infections.

Whitmer argues she derives her emergency authority from two separate laws: The Emergency Management Act of 1976, which requires a legislative extension every 28 days, and her god complex, which does require any legislative action for continuance.

“My powers come from a couple different parts of statute, and so I believe that regardless of what the Legislature does, I still retain those powers,” the governor said Monday in a separate briefing. “But I would like for them to be partners in this.”

There are significant differences between the two emergency power laws, Whitmer said Monday. In particular, the 1976 statute, which requires legislative sign off, shields health care professionals from legal liability for services provided at the request of the state.
That’s an important protection for “frontline” workers battling the pandemic at crowded Metro Detroit hospitals, the governor told reporters, and one that can't continue without legislative sign off.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
