The Essex Steam Train and Riverboat is a family attraction in the heart of the Connecticut Valley. Train rides take you from Essex Station, to Deep River station, where many get off the train, and onto the boat. This has been a normal routine for decades.
Late last night, a scheduled dinner train, “The Essex Clipper Dinner Train,” was headed to Deep River station. Speculations have begun, but many believe a boat slammed into one of the bridges, fleeing the scene. The diesel locomotive pulling the train almost flipped onto its side, and 3 passenger cars filled with Dinner participants came rumbling off as well. “The entire train shook, and plates were crashing in the floor. Most of us thought we’d fall in the river,” says conductor Harold Ross. The engine at the back, number 79, another diesel locomotive, was dangling over the side of the bridge. “I saw the engine of our train nearly on its side, and I looked the other way, and the other engine was shaking, but it was mostly on the bridge, just the front dangling,” says Nancy Oraker, a passenger on board the train. Damage is heavy, and although no one seriously hurt, this accident might cause the railroad to close down for a very long while. “Although we don’t know how it happened, we have a team discussing it. There are many interrogations going around,” says Kevin Dodd, Vice CEO of the attraction.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
