Two small whale bones were found near the Wind Caves in Anza Borrego SP. these bones were found by hikers looking for wildflowers.

The petrified remains, believed to be anywhere from 3.5 to 4 million years old from the Pliocene period, also included mussels, clams, snails, crabs and even shark teeth, said Rodney Hubscher, a paleontologist with the San Diego Natural History Museum.

The bones that were found in the area, which Hubscher described as “fossiliferous,” included those from a front fin of a whale, some large vertebra of a halibut-type fish and a shell that was about five inches across, Hubscher said. Remains of stingrays, sand dollars, oysters and more fish and whale specimens will likely be found with further excavation.

“We expect to find some pretty neat things,” he said, adding that scientists can learn a lot from what they find.

Hubscher said the face of the hill next to the wind caves is largely supported by the fossils that piled on top on each other and cemented together over the millennia.

He said that when the area is excavated you can practically “just see fossils falling out.”

The Holy Grail would be a complete skeleton or even a skull, but whether that kind of treasure will be unearthed remains to be seen.

More work in the area will take place in the coming weeks.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
