There were a lot of strange cases in New York during the '20s, but this definatelly takes the cake. Detective disappears and... ghost woman?

THE DAILY PLANET December 2, 1927 writes:

DETECTIVE MCMILLAN DISAPPEARS: "GHOST WOMAN" MYSTERY CONTINUES
by MADDIE MARY

Alice Dorino and Alex McMillan were reported missing in November 28, 1927 at the New York City Police Department.

The Emergency Service Unit's officer George Norman was the first to get involved in this strange case. In March 3, 1927 Norman got a call from the Fisher & Lyam calling center. At the end of the line was a woman claiming to be Alice Dorino and wanted urgently to meet detective Alex McMillan.

The manager of the calling center though, Violeta Crickard, insisted that there was no Alice Dorino in the company.

Detective McMillan visited the given location only to find an empty car. A witness saw a person, now believed to be Dorino, in the car's passenger seat at the time of the call, but when the detective arrived a few hours later, the car appeared to be empty. When deputies were called to the car they said it had apparently been parked there since February 19, 1927.

In March 6, 1927 detective McMillan received another call at his house. The woman said she was Alice Dorino and required help because, apparently, she was trapped in a building that looked like an illegal liquor warehouse near the Marine Barracks. The officers found the warehouse, discovering also a whole crime syndicate. A huge search party was formed the next day but Dorino was nowhere to be found.

In March 9, 1927 detective McMillan found Alice Dorino sitting in his office. Dorino brought him a present to thank him for rescuing her, leaving the detective baffled and confused. When he asked his colleagues how the woman entered his office they insisted that noone saw that woman walking in the department, complicating things even more.

McMillan searched all the department files and found 8 Alice Dorinos, none of which matched the appearance of the woman that greeted him.

The following months Alice Dorino was sighted attending several social events, including the Jazz show at the home of the Senator William A. Clark, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, many concerts in Carnegie Hall, the Rose Club Ball in Plaza Hotel, Brooklyn Museum art exhibits, Roxy Theatre and Ziegfeld Theatre opening, Cotton Club Canapé Party, Risa's Martin Garden Party, Poet's Edna St Vincent Millay Parties, A’Lelia Walker art displays at the Dark Tower and even the Police Spring Ball.

In May 21, 1927 McMillan was hit while driving by a car that was involved in a grand theft auto case. The driver got away, but in the back seat was Alice Dorino, badly wounded, and another woman. McMillan rushed Dorino to the hospital, where he was informed that her injuries were not associated with the crash. The other female had minor injuries from the car accident and said that she was Dorino's friend.

A week later Dorino was spotted at The Daily Planet's Summer Event, approaching McMillan.

Detective McMillan mentioned that his thorough research about Dorino led to a dead end and he called her to the department for recognition. She had identification and papers and was persistand that it was all valid but McMillan said that he has never seen anything like those documents in any country. Dorino was to be held at the department until the case would be solved.
McMillan opened the door the next day to find the cell completely empty. The detective was there all night, as well as other officers. There was no sign of disrupture in the cell and all the doors were locked.

McMillan stormed to Dorino's apartment, near Brooklyn botanic garden. A neighour descried the scene: "There she was, drinking a cup of tea, smiling, speaking calmly about how the detective oppened the cell door for her, like a proper gentleman. The detective yelling in despair that he never did, almost collapsing on the doorstep."
McMillan was almost relieved of his duties when Dorino admitted that she escaped while he was in the bathroom.

Three days later Dorino was released without further explanation.

In June 10, 1927 Dorino made a reservation at the hotel Commodore. She made two calls from the hotel, one to a woman named Clementin Phillips and another to McMillan.

Phillips was confirmed to be the same woman that accompanied Dorino and the unknown man in the vehicle that crashed on McMillans car.
In June 30, 1927 Dorino, McMillan, Phillips and an unknown man were seen at Brighton Beach.

Dorino and McMillan frequently visited one another before their dissapearance in November 28, 1927. The last time they were seen was in "Plaza" Pastry Shop at Sterling Street, November 27, 1927.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
