Saskatchewan News – A Saskatchewan man who bought a lottery ticket more than a year ago and then lost it received a cheque for $50 million on Tuesday, becoming the winner of what officials called the biggest unclaimed jackpot in Canadian history.

Ira Elderkin's case was “unique” because it was the first time the Saskatchewan Lottery and Gaming Corporation identified and located a winner through its claims investigation process, OLG CEO Rod Phillips told reporters.OLG said there have been about 5,500 cases over the past two years where people have tried to claim winnings without having their tickets.

After finally receiving his winnings, Elderkin said he was still deciding what to do with the money.

“I’m suddenly going to have a lot more options than I had before and the opportunities to do some pretty cool things,” he said, adding that international travel and setting up a local gun range were among his plans.

“I’ve been so busy with work and grand kids so it’s going to be kind of nice to have all those options open.”

Being in the spotlight after winning, however, has been a little daunting.

“I think the most difficult part is losing your obscurity,” he said. “We’re very quiet, very private people so suddenly to lose that and have everyone know what was going on was a bit stressful for me.”

Elderkin a SERM employee, is contemplating retirement from his job and focus full-time on handling his newfound cash.

“I thought I’m going to be really busy just organizing all this and investing this and making sure that it’s sustainable,” he said. “I really have to focus on that.”

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
