SAN FRANCISCO, Ca (KRON4) — A well-known, family-owned popular donut shop in San Francisco is closing its doors for good amid the coronavirus pandemic.

In just a couple of days, Bob’s Donuts would have been celebrating 43 years in business. In fact, they just opened a second location in the up-and-coming NOPA neighborhood. But because of the coronavirus, they have made the decision to permanently shut down both of their locations: on Polk St and Baker St. KRON 4 spoke with the owners, who say coming to this decision wasn’t easy.

“It took me two hours to write it, plenty of tears, but it just had to be done,” said owner Elinor Ahn.

Ahn made the announcement Sunday on Facebook.

“This was about about money, but also about lives” said Elinor Ahn, owner.

“People are dying,” said Ahn’s husband, Howard.

The couple said that the decision came after Gov. Gavin Newom announced that people needed to stay home due to the coronavirus through the beginning of May, if not longer.

“Everybody go home, except go get takeout at your local restaurant. I really felt trapped by that because if everyone should be at home, then why should our employees be here?” said Ahn.

Bob’s Donuts is a low-margin business. The couple says over the years they have taken quite a few hits that almost took their business, but the community has always stepped up to save them.

“We have been through several crises, you know. In 2001, 9/11, then the war started in (2003), then we had a financial crisis in (2007), there has always been a threat of taking down this restaurant,” said Howard.

The pandemic was the last straw. They didn’t want to risk the health of their 30 employees and with the future uncertain, they say it was time.

“Their lives are more important than a dollar coming in the door,” said Elinor.

Now the couple is having to close the business that sent their children to college and that turned longtime customers into family members.

“This is going to be the most weirdest feeling I have had in 43 years because this is not going to be normal,” said Roscoe.

The Ahns say that despite the governor and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention allowing carry-out and drive-thru services at restaurants, they would like to see other restaurants close to let employees stay home.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
