Left unchecked, the behavior of a deceptive colleague can damage your reputation and performance. It can also create a hostile work environment in which productivity and morale are negatively impacted. Protect yourself and your professional reputation by taking immediate steps to address deception in the workplace and, if necessary, clear your name.

1. Identify the deception. People are often adept at being crafty and sly in the way they go about deceiving others, so pinpointing specific deceptive behaviors can be challenging. A deception might be as simple as a colleague “forgetting” to include you in an important meeting, or as outrageous as stealing a presentation and passing it off as her own. Serious deceptions related to safety or illegal activity require the immediate attention of your supervisor, but a slow build-up of “little” things should be documented in detail so you have a paper trail to reference.

2. Look for the motivation behind someone's deceptive behavior. When you identify what the deceptive colleague is trying to get out of her behavior, you become better equipped to deal with it. For example, try to determine whether she lies to make herself look better, to compensate for a professional shortcoming, or to undercut a colleague. This kind of information provides insight that can help you deal with the problem effectively.

3. Be proactive when you see deceptive behavior. For example, if your colleague routinely attempts to pass off your work as hers, start submitting your work early so she doesn't have a chance to claim credit for it. If she tells an outright lie about you, call her on it in public with a simple phrase such as, “That is not a true statement.” Just make sure you can document your point with tangible evidence.

4. Confront the deceiver. Deceptive people either deny their actions, claim their victims are blowing things out of proportion, or continue with their actions unabated and unapologetic. Confronting the offending colleague directly puts her on notice that you are on to her tactics and will no longer tolerate them. This might be enough to stem the tide of poor behavior. Be stern but professional. Make your point calmly and clearly and do not make threats against the colleague.

5. Consult your boss or human resources representative. Management wants to know about deception in the workplace because it can be costly and damaging to the company’s reputation. Prepare yourself with as much evidence as you can to support your claims. Enlist the help of other colleagues if they are aware of or impacted by the deceptive colleague.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
