If you’re in AL and able to get your hands on some of Maylon Jones Memphis style Pork Ribs consider yourself lucky: The best barbecue in Alabama isn’t easy to come by. But that wasn’t going to stop me from trying.
Hootenanny Underground Barbecue isn’t even technically a business, though donations are accepted. These cookouts are invite-only and the best way to get in is by communicating with maylon on Instagram or Facebook. We message him after seeing his stories about what he was preparing for the week and we chat about our love for barbecue and art. Eventually, he invites us to his cookout, asks for my order, and sends me an address.

For maylon, gas service man by day and pitmaster by night, these cookouts are a labor of love. His slabs of Ribs come out of his custom-built smoker moist and tender; his spare ribs are encrusted in a rich, complex bark with beautiful shine like no other

“Barbecue and cooking are my art,” says Maylon. “Other people may have their art and I enjoy talking to them about our creativity and inspirations.”

Maylon used to host his casual Saturday afternoon gatherings in Cullman AL but recently moved them to Ardmore AL to change up the experience for himself and his guests. When I arrive, he wraps my order in a peach-paper package and prepares a small Rib sample. I drop some cash in a box in return. Some guests take their food to go, but I stick around and devour mine on site while mingling with others who just couldn’t wait to dig in.

“There’s more to it than just barbecue,” Maylon says. . It brings all these people together who would otherwise Maylon plans on opening Hootenanny Bbq which will be available But until then, you’ll find him in the backyard, smoking meats low and slow. And when his new joint finally opens, his barbecue won’t seem so unattainable anymore. Everyone will be invited to see what’s cooking under the hood.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
