Former Leading Sydney Apprentice Parsons was back in the saddle at Randwick on Tuesday for the first time since being handed an 18-month ban for placing a bet on a horse he was riding.

Parsons is preparing for a return to race riding next month when his disqualification expires on August 26th

The former number one Apprentice rider for Gai Waterhouse in Australia was permitted to ride in trials on Friday at Randwick.

Parsons said he was receiving great support from Sydney's leading stables including Godolphin, who he once again rode in the royal blue silks on Friday.

"I'm on a freelance role from here on in," Parsons said on Racing.com's After The Last program.

"I've had my first trial meeting on Friday at Randwick and I've had about 15 trial rides for about five different trainers."

"Godolphin is among them so that's really good and Chris Waller, (Peter and Paul) Snowden, (John) O'Shea and (Gai) Waterhouse, so probably the five leading stables in Sydney, so I couldn't ask for better than that."

Parsons was suspended in December 2016 after pleading guilty to having an interest in a bet on Astern who won on debut at Randwick in December 2015.

A stewards' inquiry found Parsons had netted $4000 from a $1000 bet placed on his behalf by punter Anthony Gardiner.

Keen to move on from the mistake, the popular Apprentice said he was determined to get back to the top of the riding ranks.

"I'm definitely hungrier for success and probably know how to handle it a lot better," Parsons said.

"Hopefully I'm allowed the opportunity to get back to where I was 18 months ago...I don't want to be too far off the mark come spring time, I want to be right up on the top jockey's heels.

"I'm looking forward to getting back to that spot and I'll definitely treat it with a bit more respect and a different approach to everything."

A two-time winner of the Sydney Apprentice premiership, Parsons said it was a surreal feeling walking through the gates at Randwick on Tuesday following his lengthy period on the sidelines.

"It was good to be back riding Trials, it was good to be out there with the other jockeys and mix it with the trainers."

"It was quite a surreal feeling walking into the barriers, but it's good to be back."

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
