After a few recent shark attacks in Florida, some have been wondering how often it happens in Southwest Florida.

According to the International Shark Attack File, the last time an attack happened was 2 years ago on Fort Myers Beach. A relatively small shark bit off a chunk of someone’s foot.

Jim Berry was swimming at Lovers Key Beach in a popular fishing channel in Bonita Springs on Tuesday morning when he was bitten on the arm by an unknown shark.

The 50-year-old said he punched the shark until it let go before desperately running out of the water.

He said: "I think [my arm] got the end of his mouth because his head was bigger than [the size of the bite mark], it's not just a little head like that.

"But I think he just turned and snapped and just got the end of it [arm] and just missed an artery, thank God.”

"I was swimming so I went to move out a bit deeper and just put my head down and head butted it and then it just grabbed me, and I just started punching it until it let go."

Mr. Berry was being treated in hospital, where he was in a stable condition.

Drew Cameron, who was on the beach with his wife, said: "We went for a walk in the morning and saw him walk down to the water." And within about two minutes he came back into the beach screaming out for help, so we ran down with a couple of other boys to help him.

"(He was) bleeding on the bicep, bleeding on the leg, we wrapped him up with some bandages and called 911."

Although this attack was non fatal and extremely rare. Locals are worried about swimming and going near the water. A shark attack like this usually doesn't happen twice but locals aren't taking any chances.

Jim Berry [shark attack victim] ended by saying something scary. “The shark was whispering [while he was attacking me] in an impossibly human voice “Mike is next.”

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
