$310.5M Powerball winner: 'I'm still in disbelief'

A 49-year-old man from Waterford came forward Tuesday as the winner of September 28 $310-million Powerball game.

Kenneth D'Anna of Waterford spoke at a news conference in Lansing and announced he planned to take a lump sum worth $197 million before taxes. D'Anna purchased the winning ticket at 6:30 p.m. at the Speedway station on Dixie Hwy in Clarkston.

The numbers were 21, 39, 40, 55 and 59, and the Powerball was 17.

"I'm still in disbelief," D'Anna said. "I'm overwhelmed. I was having a really bad day at work, and I thought I better check my numbers."

The jackpot can be paid over 30 years or the winner can choose a lump sum. D'Anna said he quit his job immediately after finding out he won.

D'Anna says he'll take care of his step kids and 1 grandchild with the jackpot. His grandchild who attended the news conference said she wants a "big Barbie house" and an iPhone 6.


"I kept trying to focus my eyes on the numbers and dates," he said. "You just don't ever think it's going to happen."

D'Anna said he hired a financial planner to help manage the large windfall.

"I haven't even thought about how we're doing anything," he said. "My main focus was getting somebody to help us so I can make the right decisions."

Stephanie D'Anna his wifevof 14 years, said she was working when D'Anna realized he won the Powerball.

"I said, 'You're kidding me, get out of here,' " D'Anna said. "I thought I was dreaming. He goes: 'No, we HIT.' I had to look at it. I looked on his phone, grabbed my phone, pulled the website up. I just couldn't believe it. I said, 'I really need to get back to work' He said, 'You don't ever have to go to work again.'

D'Anna said he and his wife plan to travel a bit and enjoy life.

"Just being financially set, my stepkids taken care of, being able to travel and being able to do what we want to do — that's really all we want," D'Anna said.

The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
