This man got more than just one stroke of luck.

Matthew Briel, from Kirkwood, NY, was understandably stoked when he received a phone call from the New York Lottery last week, informing him that he’s won the “Lucky for Life” drawing. It wasn’t until he’d hung up the phone that Briel remembered that, in addition to the ticket he’d bought, his family had also given him a season lottery ticket for the game with the same numbers that he’d purchased — making him a double winner.

During the initial call delivering the good news, a lottery representative informed Briel that there was another Lucky for Life winner from New York, Christian Teja, director of communications at the New York Lottery, told Yahoo News. After he remembered the ticket from his family, with the same number combination based on his loved ones’ birthdays, Briel picked up the phone again.

“He called back and it all came together when he was like, ‘I’m that guy in Kirkwood,’” Teja told Yahoo.

The chances of one person winning the same lottery with the same numbers twice are extremely rare — a one in 985,517 chance, according to the outlet.

“This is a very unique occurrence for this type of a game,” Teja told HuffPost in an email. “It is extremely rare for the same person to have two tickets with the same winning combination. People will typically play multiple sets of numbers to increase their chances of winning.”

Teja said that while they have gotten other winners with incredible cases of luck, Briel's story takes the cake.

“There are numerous people who have won $1 million on scratch tickets more than once, but this unlikely circumstance certainly puts it high on the list of the luckiest of all time,” Teja told HuffPost.

Briel collected his winnings on Thursday, choosing a lump sum cash option of two amounts of $973,000 after tax — or $1,946,000 in total — in lieu of receiving $105,000 a year for up to 20 years. He plans on using the money to pay off his daughter’s college tuition, and take his family on a vacation, according to a press release from the New York Lottery.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
