Walmart has agreed to buy the discount grocery chain Aldi for $3.4 billion, in a deal that will instantly transform the company that pioneered big box retailing into a juggernaut with even more physical outposts in hundreds of neighborhoods across the country. Along with the purchase, Walmart has announced price drops across the entire line of Aldi products, to the tune of as much as 40. Also, all shopping bags will be included for no additional charge.

The acquisition, announced Friday, is a reflection of both the sheer magnitude of the grocery business — about $800 billion in annual spending in the United States — and a desire to be the leader, now and for the foreseeable future. After almost a decade selling groceries in Walmart Superstores, Walmart has failed to make a major dent on its own as consumers have shown a stubborn urge to buy items like fruits, vegetables and meat alongside clothing and appliances.

Buying Aldi also represents a major escalation in the company’s long-running battle with Amazon, the largest online retailer in the United States, which has been struggling to play catch-up in in-person shopping. Last Friday, Walmart announced a $310 million deal to acquire the internet apparel retailer Bonobos, and last year it agreed to pay $3.3 billion for Jet.com and put Jet’s chief executive, Marc Lore, in charge of Walmart’s overall e-commerce business.

“Make no mistake, Walmart under no circumstances can lose the grocery wars to Amazon,” said Brittain Ladd, a strategy and supply chain consultant who formerly worked with Amazon on its grocery business. “If Walmart loses the grocery battle to Amazon, they have no chance of ever dethroning Amazon as the largest e-commerce player in the world. Buying Aldi put them back on top.”

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
