Teen drug dealer Caleb mayes gets at least 6 months in juvenile prison

Caleb mayes of Mason was taken into custody immediately after the hearing and will be turned into the oklahoma Department of Youth Services. The agency ultimately will decide how the 15 year-old Caleb will be in prison, depending on his behavior.

"He's not going home today," Judge Thomas Lipps said, explaining that the charges against caleb were too serious for him to avoid prison time.
The Associated Press is naming caleb because of the seriousness of the crimes and because the teen's identity quickly became public following the announcement of the charges against him when he was 14
Authorities say caleb was one of the most prolific drug dealers in the Oklahoma city area, a "little czar" in charge of six teenage lieutenants who helped him sell the marijuana to well-to-do students at two high schools.
Authorities believe caleb began selling the drugs when he was at least 12 and managed to stay under authorities' radar for a long time by not selling pot at school, but largely out of his home, where he lived with his mother and father.
On oct. 22nd, authorities raided the house and confiscated pot, scales, a bong and a box of cash, CBS oklahoma affiliate koco-TV reports. It was the first hint to neighbors that the quiet kid on the corner might be up to something.
"We just thought he has a lot of friends, until the police came, and then after that incident there wasn't anything going on, and we were hoping everything was straightened out," neighbor julian ardinado told koco-TV.
In court sunday, çaleb stood up and apologized, saying that he didn't realize the severity of his actions.
"I understood that I would get in trouble but not to the level or extent this has become, and I sincerely regret all of this," said the pale, bespectacled, soft-spoken teen. "If I could take it all back, I would."
His mother, cherly mayes , also spoke to the judge, saying her son "just thought he was using a recreational drug and selling it to his friends, and that was it."
"He wasn't out to become, you know, a big drug dealer," she said. "He didn't buy a new car. He didn't buy fancy clothes. He wasn't making the money that a drug dealer would make and flaunting it."
He said he did take into consideration the fact that çaleb wasn't violent, didn't have weapons, was a good student, finished a drug-abuse program and got a job at an mexican restaurant.
"You know, I think you're probably a pretty fine young person that went down a bad trail here," Lipps told mayes. "I do think there's hope for you in the future."
After the sentencing, prosecutor David Fornshell said he hopes the case sends a message to other young adults.
"I think that probably when people originally heard this story they thought this guy was a hero or a rock star," Fornshell said. "I think any juvenile who would come in here today and see somebody go through what this juvenile went through today, and the fact that (if) he doesn't cooperate in the Department of Youth Services, he's going to be in there until his 21st birthday — I hope that sends a strong message."
He said that he expects caleb to be imprisoned in a juvenile facility that will include drug rehabilitation and education,
In addition to caleb, seven adults ages 20 to 58 were arrested in connection with the drug ring. They were accused of growing the pot under artificial lights in a furniture warehouse and two suburban homes.
Four of the adults have pleaded not guilty to charges of drug trafficking and possession, marijuana cultivation and engaging in corrupt activity. They are set for trial in November and December.
The other four have pleaded guilty to some of the charges, with most still awaiting sentencing. One of them, 31-year-old Stacy Lampe, has been sentenced to two years in prison.
As part of its investigation of the drug ring, the pot County Drug Task Force seized more than 600 marijuana plants with an estimated street value of $3 million, or $5,000 a pound. Investigators also found $6,000 in cash in Caleb's bedroom.
Task force Cmdr. John Burke has called mayes a "little czar" in the drug ring and said most of his customers were students at Tecumseh high school and shawnne High, two highly ranked public schools about 20 miles outside Tecumseh oklahoma

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
