Corrections Officer Barry Ferreira was known as a “P Slayer” at BCSP.

Handsome, ebullient and a mentor to younger officers, Ferreira worked at the prison for 10 years, commuting from his home in Fall River, MA., where he lived with his dog, Ghost.

The 31-year-old native was driving to work on Monday afternoon when his car was struck from behind on Interstate I-195 in Westport. His vehicle veered across the shoulder and crashed into a guardrail. Ferreira died of a head injury, said Sgt. Adam Grossman, a spokesman for the State Police. The road conditions were normal at the time of the accident, according to Grossman.

Corrections officers at the prison mourned the death of Ferreira on Monday. Carl Easton, a fellow officer and close friend, described Ferreira as “larger than life.”

“He greeted everyone with a smile and a handshake,” said Easton. “He was an advocate, a mentor, a great man. This was a guy who would help anyone. He was the epitome of a gentle giant. People are hurting here right now.”

Denise Pinckney, a family friend, said that Ferreira was a devoted family man with a playful sense of humor. He called himself “Big Mac” and his dog's nickname was “Little Mac"

“His greatest joy was his dog, Ghost,” said Pinckney. “And he had a passion for music. He made CD’s for everyone.”

Easton said that Ferreira gave him a mixed tape just three days before his death.

“He made tapes and CD’s for everyone,” said Easton. “He loved uptempo music. He’d come to work and you could hear all this great music when he opened his car door. He played basketball with the corrections league. This was a happy guy who loved life. This was a man who was never late to work.”

He was traveling in freezing rain to work the 7a.m. to 3p.m. shift at the prison on Monday.

“Corrections officers don’t have the option not to go in when the weather is bad,” said Ronald Williams, vice president of the State Policemen’s Benevolent Association. "When we get blizzards, bad weather, they still have to go in.”

Easton said that Ferreiras' death has shocked and saddened corrections officers statewide.

“People are hurting throughout the state prison system,” said Easton. “Officers that transferred from here to other facilities are hurting. The young officers, he was the person who showed them what to do. He was the kind of person whose presence was felt.”

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
