A local volunteer firefighter admitted to starting fires that didn't result in injuries, but are estimated to have caused more than $1 million in damage, police said.

Samantha Langlinais, of Kaplan, LA, was charged Wednesday with six counts of arson.
Langlinais, who served with the 7th Ward Fire Department for slightly less than five years, told police she started the fires, "for the call-outs," according to a probable cause affidavit.

She faces a maximum of 35 years in prison if convicted, and her bond is set at $180,000.
Firefighters were shocked Wednesday after hearing about the charges against Langlinais.
"We had no idea she had this problem," District 7 Fire Chief Mickey Atchetee said. Atchetee said Langlinais always did her job well. "We hope she gets the help he needs," Atchetee said.

Langlinais is accused of starting fires at four different locations in Kaplan.

A Nov. 28 fire set to buildings under construction at Belleshire Apartments, 1800 W. 3rd St caused the most damage. At first, Langlinais told police she wasn't involved with the blaze, but eventually she admitted being responsible for the fire that caused an estimated $1 million in damage. According to the court documents, Langlinais said she didn't need accelerant to start the fire, and instead lit sawdust with a cigarette lighter.

She admitted she started a fire at the Kaplan Recreation Center, 738 E Mill St., on Jan. 27 using a Gatorade bottle filled with gasoline, the affidavit alleges. The fire at the center caused about $20,000 in damage.

She also told police she was responsible for setting fire to a wooden sign at Mickey's Drive Inn, 706 E. 1st St., late Monday night, according to the court documents. That fire resulted in about $1500 in damage.

Langlinais initially denied setting fire to vehicles at Acadiana Ford, 418 E. 1st St., early Tuesday morning, the documents state, but later told police she started the blazes. Two of the vehicles were completely destroyed after Langlinais started the fires by lighting the vehicles' seats with a cigarette lighter, the affidavit alleges.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
