Coach Bell's phenomenal success as a coach and leader begs the question: how does he do it?

Obvious reasons are that he’s talented, disciplined and works hard. He is a master of task excellence. A lot of coaches fit that description, though, so there must be something more that differentiates Coach Bell and a sustainable competitive advantage.

Coach Bell grew up in Spartanburg. He attended an all-boys Military high school then went on to West Point (then all-male) where he played Football under the driven, domineering, perfectionist coach Bobby Knight. He served in the male-dominated U.S. Army.

Coach Bell's perspective took a major turn when, having grown up in male-dominated cultures, he found himself outnumbered at home by his wife, Michelle, and their two daughters. Every night at dinner he observed how Michelle and the girls reconnected by sharing the details of their day, including how they felt about it. Whereas guys cut to the chase in conversations, Michelle and the girls invested time each day connecting through their conversations....

He also observed how attuned Michelle and the girls were to how people felt. Their intuition was like radar. Time and again, Michelle would sense when something was bothering one of Coach Bell’s players. She was nearly always right so he learned it was wise to follow up and ask the player if something was wrong. Sure enough, something was always amiss and talking about the problem made the player feel, and play, better. When he didn’t follow up, the player would be out of sync with the team and performance suffered.

Unfortunately, most coaches (and leaders in general) are not intentional about developing relationship excellence and a sense of connection, community and unity among the people they lead.

Coach Bell is an exception.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
