Scientists all over the world have stated time and time again that it would be nearly impossible to create a vaccine that would cure the common cold because there are over 250 strains. Researchers have given up studying the common cold because it has been labeled "a waste of time" since the common cold is not considered a life threatening illness.

All of us have had a cold, dozens upon dozens of times in our lives. While it may not be life-threatening, it certainly isn't a pleasant experience.

Most colds are caused by viruses which do not respond to antibiotics, however antibiotics are frequently being overprescribed, simply to accommodate patients requests. The antibiotics being prescribed are truly intended for colds that last longer than 7-10 days and become bacterial.

Most of the time, we when we wait it out and treat our symptoms individually, viral illnesses will clear up within 5-7 days. Those 5-7 days can feel like a lifetime though, when our sinuses are blocked, we cough all night long and have difficulty breathing. Having a sore throat is probably none of the most unpleasant of all symptoms of some of the common cold viruses.

In October of 2016, a local RI resident contacted the RI Dept. of Health with news that she had created a cure for what we all know as "The Common Cold."

Carley Chambers is a Practice Manager at a Family Physicians office in Tiverton, RI and a lifetime resident of Bristol, RI. She has spent the last 7 years privately researching, testing and running trials on herself and her friends, determined to develop a vaccine that would cure all 250 strains of the common cold. "I knew it was a risky decision, but I'm not one to play by the rules," she said in an interview with journalist John Cummings of React 365. "My practice will begin trials once approved by the Dept. of Health, I'm really looking forward to seeing the reactions from my patients when they go from miserably sick with a cold to never having to experience another cold in their lifetime." We certainly hope she has the honor of one day seeing this happen.

The vaccine is still undergoing official testing and will require FDA approval before being legally available for use by healthcare providers. React 365 reached out to Becky Swanson, the vaccine research and development coordinator for the RI Dept. of health, but she did not have immediate comment in regards to Miss Chambers vaccine.

A vaccine that cures the common cold would be one of the most groundbreaking developments in healthcare in the last decade. Millions of people would benefit from this. Ms. Chambers told React 365 that if approved by the Dept. of Health and the FDA, she would ensure that the vaccine is cost affective and that 20 of proceeds would go towards The American Cancer Society to fund research and development for a cure for Cancer.

It is uncertain whether this vaccine will be successful, but we are all hopeful that it will at least give scientists reason to do further research into this vaccine.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
