An 15-year-old has been charged with second-degree murder and another person is in custody in connection to Jason Varela's death, police officials said on Monday.

A jogger discovered the 16-year-old’s body on a hiking and biking trail in The green way on Oct. 24 Yakima Police began investigating his death as a homicide.

Sgt. James Langston, with the Yakima Police Department, said Felipe Brizz , 15, faces a second-degree murder charge for his alleged role in Varela's death. Seraphine and Daniel Villanueva , Varela's mother and stepfather, said charges being filed bring them one step closer to closure.

“A baby step for a little bit of closure in a way that they’ve captured somebody,” Daniel Villanueva said. “I’m still really hurt, but I feel a little better knowing that they have somebody in custody.”

A Yakima Police Department detective called Seraphine and Daniel Villanueva early Monday morning to tell them two people were in custody and one had been charged. Daniel Villanueva said he is thankful the Police Department has kept them informed throughout the investigation. Seraphine Varela said they still have a lot of questions.

“We wanted answers and I know that even though there are arrests made, we will probably never know why or how,” Seraphine Varela said. “It is questions that I do want answers to, but I’ve been told that I will probably never get them and that does hurt, because I want to know why.”

Police have not released further details on what may have led to Varela's death or a cause of death.

whale spotted in illinois river A humpback whale was spotted near Morris IL in the Illinois River today. The sighting comes just days after 2 Great White Sharks were seen frolicking in the same area. While not impossible, it does seem unlikely. It is thought that the whale may have followed the sharks as they sometimes do in the wild. The whale would of had to travel over 1250 miles to get to this location. The Marine Biologist Association will be in town for a full investigation. Until we have answers, we are asking folks to keep their pontoons and fishing boats docked.

two great white sharks found swimming in mississippi river near saint louis, missouri. While it is not entirely impossible, it is incredibly uncommon for salt water dwelling creatures to stay for lengthy periods of time in fresh water. However, two Great White Sharks have managed to survive the trip and make their way up the Mississippi River somehow. Believed to have started as a mating couple, the two are assumed to have swam the 920 mile journey from the mouth of the Mississippi River that is connected to the Gulf Of Mexico. Officials in Saint Louis have contacted the Missouri Conservation Department and will likely have a team in the river soon to capture the two lost sharks.
